The Serbian Coordinating Centre for Kosovo-Metohija deputy chief in charge of the protection of cultural heritage in the province, Branislav Krstic, said today that the dormitory of the UNESCO-protected Sveti Arhangeli monastery, the Bogorodica Ljeviska, Sveti Spas, and Sveti Djordje churches as well as the buildings of Prizren's theology faculty and eparchy were burned down during yesterday's eruption of violence in Kosovo-Metohija.
Krtic told a press conference that the Pecka Patrijarsija and Visoki Decani monasteries are being secured by strong forces of the Italian KFOR and that the situation in the Gorioc monastery is also stable.
However, he said, the situation is unclear in the monasteries Devic, Sokolica, and Budisavci, which are located in purely ethnic-Albanian areas. According to Krstic, the situation in the Gracanica monastery, which is the seat of the Eparchy of Raska and Prizren, is stable and under control.
The Eparchy of Raska and Prizren said today that, according to initial reports, ethnic-Albanian extremists have set fire to 14 Orthodox churches and monasteries in the past 24 hours.
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has confirmed that the Serbian government will do everything to stop further destruction of Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo and help rebuild the destroyed monuments.
