Following the escalation of ethnic violence in the Serbian southern province of Kosovo-Metohija, Serbia-Montenegrin President Svetozar Marovic called an extraordinary session of the Supreme Defence Council (VSO), which urged UNMIK and KFOR to secure protection of life and property of Serbs and Montenegrins in the province.
The VSO appealed to other international institutions to do the same and fulfill their obligations stipulated by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.
The extraordinary session was attended by VSO members: President Svetozar Marovic, Acting Serbian President Predrag Markovic and President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic, and other country's top statesmen: Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, Serbia-Montenegrin Minister of Defence Boris Tadic, Deputy Minister of Defence Vukasin Maras, Chief of the General Staff of the Army of Serbia-Montenegro Branko Krga and VSO Secretary Colonel Ljubisa Jokic.
The VSO Military Cabinet supports contacts of the relevant bodies of Serbia-Montenegro, the Serbian government and the Army of Serbia-Montenegro with appropriate international institutions. The Army of Serbia-Montenegro voiced readiness to help international peacekeeping forces in their efforts to stabilise the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, in line with the Resolution 1244 and the missions of KFOR and UNMIK.
The VSO committed the Chief of the General Staff to watch over the situation in the province and propose other necessary measures.
