Speaking at a conference on a coordinated approach to Roma inclusion at a local level, focused on the education and health sectors, Ciplic observed that the latest indicators affirm that there has been some development in this respect, however, much more has to be done to ensure equal status for these people.
The percentage of Roma children dropping out of school has decreased, their access to health institutions has been improved and the number of employed Roma increased, he declared.
Ciplic announced that in cooperation with the relevant ministries and institutions, the role of mediators and assistants to the Roma population will be further improved.
Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic maintained that Serbia is trying to include as many Roma children as possible in the regular education system, adding that the first results of these efforts are already visible.
Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic explained that thanks to the efforts of his Ministry and relevant institutions in the health system, huge advancement has been achieved in the realisation of the Millennium Goals in Serbia.
Milosavljevic said that this particularly refers to improving the health of women and children, and reducing the differences in access to health care among the Roma population.
The project "Health mediators" was launched in cooperation with the OSCE Mission in 2008, he highlighted.
Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert recalled that the EU has so far allocated €50 million to help the Serbian government in the implementation of the inclusion of the Roma population into society.
Degert specified that these funds are intended to improve education, health, social affairs, employment, and the inclusion of refugees and displaced persons into society.
Another €3.8 million will be allocated for the preschool programme for Roma children, which should contribute to reducing absence from school and leaving school, he announced noting that 178 new pedagogic assistants will be trained.
Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia Dimitrios Kypreos outlined that in the last four years this organisation has allocated €2 million for the introduction of pedagogical and health mediators within the above-mentioned project.
Certificates on completion of training for 55 assistants to help the Roma population were handed out today.
