Opening the “Reform of Secondary School Vocational Education – modernising the secondary school vocational education system” conference, Obradovic recalled that Serbia has been implementing a reform of education over the last seven years, with the help of the European Union (EU). So far, €4 million has been invested for this purpose.
He pointed out that the objective of the reform of the secondary school vocational education, initiated by the Ministry of Education in 2003, has been the modernisation of the vocational education and its alignment with the demands of the labour market.
With technical and financial support from the EU, 28 new courses related to eight lines of work have been introduced into the vocational education system to date, the Minister specified.
He announced that future car electricians, land surveyors, bakers, butchers, dairymen, agricultural machine mechanics, and agricultural, veterinary and food technicians will have up to 70% of practical training in their final year, while classes will have up to 24 students.
Cooks, waiters and pastry cooks will also have new education programmes as of the 2011/2012 school year.
Head of the European Commission Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said that this programme resulted in greater class attendance and a higher grade point average for students.
The students have proved to be more attentive during lessons and with practical training, they develop the necessary skills easily, which was confirmed by employers who are members of the commission at students’ final exams, Degert noticed.
He added that between 70 and 80 high-school graduates found jobs in the first three months after leaving school.
