At a press conference, held on the occasion of the 1st anniversary of this government, Obradovic said that quotas for the enrolment of freshmen for the 2009-2010 academic year have been raised and owing to amendments to the law on higher education adopted last year the number of students currently attending Serbian universities has risen.
He said that the Education Ministry has forwarded to the parliament bills on the education system and schoolbooks, adding that the government will discuss the laws on preschool education, education and student standards during the upcoming period.
The fact that the school year passed without any strikes proves the efficiency of the Education Ministry, he said.
Obradovic announced that a project for providing free schoolbooks to all first-grade pupils will be realised on September 1, adding that the Ministry, in cooperation with Telekom, is working on providing internet connections to all primary and secondary schools in Serbia.
The national report on the implementation of the Bologna Declaration has been drafted, he said, specifying that
Serbia has been graded 3.8 for its Bologna Declaration implementation process.
Obradovic pointed out that the number of Roma children in schools has also grown, adding that the Ministry, together with UNICEF, has implemented the “Schools without Violence” project.
He recalled that in the past year 302 high schools were renovated, noting that the Serbian education system employs around 127,000 people.
State Secretary at the Education Ministry Tinde Kovac-Cerovic said that mechanisms for preventing violence in schools have been established and a protocol on the prevention of violence has been forwarded to all schools.
