In the period between 1991 and 2002, Serbia recorded a substantial rise in the number of privately-owned flats, studio apartments and one-room apartments, according to the 2002 population and housing census.
The number of studio apartments rose 30.9 percent, while the number of three-room apartments went up by 14.6 percent. On the other hand, the number of apartments with five or more rooms declined by 24.8 percent.
Two-room apartments account for 36.6 percent of all apartments in the country, followed by three-room apartments which make up 27 percent.
The average apartment spanned 66 square metres in 2002, down from 66.9 square metres in 1991.
The 2002 census figures also show a rise in the quality of housing, as well as a 37.4 percent growth in the number of privately-owned apartments which accounted for 97.9 percent of all apartments in the country, compared with 76.8 percent in 1991.
