Serbia-Montenegro - Russia 1-3
MATCH REPORT: Serguey Tetyukhin had 21 smashes and two serves to help Russia beat Serbia and Montenegro 28-27, 23-25, 27-25, 28-26 Wednesday to enter the men's volleyball semi-finals in the Athens Olympics.
Sergey Braranov converted 14 kills in 28 attempts, including the last points, for Russia to finish the one hour 56 minutes marathon.
"It is a very good match, we were close in every set, but we didn't have the power to take the victory," said Grbic Vladimir of Serbia and Montenegro. " Russia played the best game in two years."
The two traditional volleyball powerhouses fought from the very beginning of the game. Serbia and Montenegro beat off three set points to make it 27-27, but an error by Dula Mester and Baranov'skill allowed Russians take the opener 29-27.
Encouraged by their performance in the first set, the Serbia and Montenegro improved their blocking and fought harder in the second. They surged ahead from the start to take a 10-6 lead with a 5-1 run and held on for a 24-22 advantage.
Mester didn't lose the chance again, he took the set point with a powerful spike and helped Serbia and Montenegro clinch the set.
The Serbia and Montenegro players seemed to steadily pull away in the third set with a lead of 14-11. But the Russians came back strongly afterward with a 5-1 run to level the score board 25-25 and Tetyukhin concluded the set with a successful spike.
"We knew that Russia team is very strong," said Ljubomir Travick, head coach of Serbia and Montenegro.
"They are one of the most powerful teams in the world. But we believed that we could win the match. We fought a lot. If we had won the two sets we lost, the match would have gone in another direction."
Russians never looked back in the fourth, they rallied an early7-5 lead. After both teams tied at 25-25, Taras Khtey came from the bench to score his only point in the game to help Russia lead 26-25.
Braranov again smashed their rivals hope with a kill to finish the game.
"It is difficult to express my feelings about this victory," said Gennady Shipulin, head coach of Russia. "I am very happy and also very grateful that my team won today. We had great combination and balance.
We had a great opponent, I would like to thank them for this great match and wish them the best of luck."
Goran Vujevic contributed 19 points for Serbia and Montenegro while Vladimir Grbic added 16, Milan Vasic had 14.
Russia will face the winner of another quarterfinal between thehost Greece and United States, which will be held later on Wednesday.
