Cubrilo said at a press conference that the aim of the project is to improve economic cooperation with the Diaspora, encourage and facilitate their investments in Serbia, and to contribute to strengthening partnership relations of the Diaspora with compatriots in Serbia.
The Diaspora is very firmly alongside their compatriots and brings $3 billion every year into the country. That is why we want to direct those funds towards development projects that will contribute to Serbia’s economic development, the creation of new jobs and in this way reduce unemployment, the Minister for the Diaspora said.
She said that estimates of the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development are that three-fourths of green-field investments are the result of mediation by the Diaspora.
Cubrilo said that this project will include seminars, meetings and work on concrete projects, as well as the identification and inventory of facilities that would be suitable for developing rural tourism.
The Minister said that centres for the Diaspora will bring together all the actors of regional and local economic development - at the levels of government, districts, municipalities, civil sector and relevant international organisations, and added that in that way, it will be easier for companies set up by people who returned to Serbia to overcome problems at the local level.
Cubrilo said that the centres will work on providing information to the Diaspora on all economic issues, and that a database on the Diaspora will be formed with the aim of achieving efficient communication and data exchange.
