Markovic told a press conference that the programme includes financial assistance intended to revive the water supply and waste water management systems in Kraljevo, Loznica, Pancevo, Sabac, Smederevo, Sombor, Sremska Mitrovica and Vrsac.
He explained that the programme will be financed by the German government with the help of German KfW Entwicklungsbank, in two phases, whose total value is €30 million.
The first phase will last 18 months, and funds to the amount of €10 million will be used for priority technical measures, the Minister said and added that the second phase starts in a year’s time and envisions €20 million for medium-size cities that meet certain criteria.
Markovic said that with the implementation of programme measures, a good basis for the sustainable development of water management will be created in the sense of financial independence, new investments and sufficient quantities of drinking water.
Maas said that this programme is a very important part of German-Serbian cooperation as well as Germany’s expression that it wants to improve utility services for Serbian citizens.
He pointed out that 600,000 people will benefit from this programme and recalled that the German government has so far financed municipalities in Serbia to the value of €150 million, noting that the assistance will continue in the future.
The four-year programme is implemented by the Serbian Municipal Infrastructure Agency, German KfW Entwicklungsbank, and a consortium of consultants led by SETEC Engineering.
The Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government is a partner in the project.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the consultants’ association, as well as representatives of the municipalities who are the benefactors of the programme.
