Japan wins Kirin Cup

Yasuhito Endo struck early in the second half as Japan edged out Ilija Petkovic's Serbia and Montenegro 1-0 to win the Kirin Cup on Tuesday.

Endo scored the only goal of an absorbing match in Yokohama four minutes into the second half, the midfielder applying a cool finish after a clever flick-on from Takayuki Suzuki.
Serbia and Montenegro, who needed to win to take the title, threatened on the break with Danko Lazovic and Savo Milosevic constantly troubling the Japanese defenders. However, the visitors failed to convert their chances into goals.
Nevertheless the three-team tournament will have been a useful experience for Pekovic's side, who begin their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a Group 7 trip to San Marino on 4 September. They had earlier beaten Slovakia 2-0, while Japan beat the Slovakians 3-1.
