Cubrilo told a press conference that the goal of the survey was to establish a basis for future cooperation with the diaspora and to assess priorities in resolving demands and problems of Serbs abroad.
She stressed that the survey, included several areas, such as elections, information, cooperation between the motherland and diaspora, citizenship, military duty and other problems and questions. The survey was not conducted on a representative sample of the Serbian diaspora, rather on a relevant sample of those members of the diaspora who are most interested and have participated in the work of the St Vitus Day Assembly.
According to Cubrilo, the Ministry of Diaspora and the agency Strategic Marketing came to the conclusion that the diaspora is most interested in better economic and cultural cooperation which includes preserving national identity.
Director of Strategic Marketing Srdjan Bogosavljevic said that older people in the diaspora took part in the survey, mainly men, but the results of the survey did create a picture of the needs of the diaspora as a whole.
The surveyors said on the occasion that the majority of Serbian diaspora were interested in participating in elections, but many of them are not registered on the voters’ list, and polling stations are too far away for them to reach.
They also expressed conviction that the diaspora is well informed on events in Serbia, and the most common sources of information are the television, internet and daily newspapers “Frankfurtske Vesti”, “Politika”, “Vecernje Novosti” and “Blic”.
The questionnaire which was designed by the ministry as a basis for continuing survey will be put up on the
website of the Ministry of Diaspora, and will be used by volunteers in
the summer garden of the ministry and surveyors of Strategic Marketing on the ground.
