Speaking at a press conference held to present results of the pilot project “Cervical Cancer Screening in Branicevski District” she stressed that the screening method of early detection of cervical cancer is very effective and its implementation in other countries resulted in a 6% to 7% reduction in the fatality rate of cervical cancer.
She pointed to the fact that effects on reduction of fatalities can become visible after a period of ten years, but results of the project can be monitored on the basis of specific indicators, during and directly after the completion of the project.
According to Karanovic, the screening method is based on use of tests through which the disease can be diagnosed in the early phase, and the patient can then be directed to further treatment.
Karanovic explained that the Branicevski District was chosen on the basis of mortality rate, while women in the age group of 30-49 were invited through letters, on the basis of data from the Serbian Ministry of Interior, for medical examination, and 57% women responded.
She warned that in Serbia daily four women are reported to have cervical cancer, with a mortality rate of one in four. She said that according to mortality rate cervical cancer is the second most common form, after breast cancer.
The project “Cervical Cancer Screening in Branicevski District” was implemented by the World Health Organisation in cooperation with the Serbian Ministry of Health, with the financial support of the French government.
