Vuksanovic told a press conference that the pilot project themed "Roma Assistant" is the result of cooperation between the OSCE mission in Serbia, European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) and the Ministry of Education and Sport. The first stage of the project will include training of 54 candidates in schools in around 20 towns.
According to Vuksanovic, assistants will work in schools chosen in line with criteria such as the number of Roma students, problems in their educational progress and the proximity of non-urban Roma settlements.
Assistants will provide support to Roma children in learning school subjects as well as in overcoming problems with teachers and other children, said the Minister.
He also said that assistants will be in touch with the children's parents with the aim of stimulating parent-teacher cooperation and try to talk students into continuing their education.
Deputy Head of OSCE mission in Serbia Anthony Pahigian said that the project yielded extremely satisfactory results in other countries concerning the reduction of the number of Roma children who leave school early and integrating them into society.
Spokesman of the EAR John White recalled that the Agency spent over €2 million for this and similar projects in Serbia, adding that through the project Serbia is making a considerable step on its road to EU integration.
President of the Secretariat for the Roma National Strategy Ljuan Koka also attended the press conference, as well as 20 future Roma assistants.
