Popovic told a press conference that the $10 million agreement was signed by the representatives of the Vinca Institute, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a consortium of three Russian companies on September 19 in Vienna and recalled that the funds have been provided from international donations.
He explained that the plan of the “Green Vinca” programme is to export used nuclear fuel to the Russian Federation, repair the radioactive waste storage facilities in Vinca and to decommission the reactor.
According to Popovic, after the first phase of the project is completed, Serbia will no longer have highly reactive waste. The Minister recalled that Vinca’s nuclear reactor was made in the former Soviet Union and was installed in 1959. In 1984, the reactor stopped working temporarily, and in 2002 for good, the Minister said.
In 2002, the government decided to launch the decommissioning and removal of the reactor, Popovic said and added that 48 kilograms of fresh nuclear fuel was transported from Vinca then.
He also said that 2.5 tons of used fuel have been stored according to all regulations and announced that repacking of the nuclear fuel will start next year. Popovic also expressed hope that all nuclear waste will be transported to Russia by 2008.
