Milosavljevic told a press conference that this important meeting will take place in Serbia for the first time in WHO’s history and noted that it is an important recognition for Serbia and its diplomacy.
He stressed that the decision was made yesterday in the 56th meeting of the WHO’s Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen, where representatives of 53 states took part, including the Serbian delegation.
According to Milosavljevic, the main topics of the meeting in Copenhagen included the European strategy for prevention and control of mass noncommunicable diseases as they cause 86% of deaths and 77% of the disease burden in the WHO European Region.
The adoption of this strategy marks a cornerstone considering that health systems so far focused mainly on treatment whereas prevention will be given priority in the future, said Milosavljevic.
He stressed that the number of heart diseases and deaths caused by heart problems in some countries went down after the launch of smoking prevention campaigns and improved treatments.
Assistant minister in charge of planning and development of the health system Snezana Simic said that WHO Regional Director for Europe Mark Danzon in his introductory speech noted that Serbia is example of a successful solution for the problem faced by the Roma population living in a lead-contaminated area in Kosovska Mitrovica.
Simic recalled that therapy for 500 Roma children who lived in the contaminated area have begun and noted that ambitious plans for resettlement and protection of the people from this area have been prepared.
