State Secretary at the Serbian Ministry of International Economic Relations Vlatko Sekulovic and Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Serbia Lance Clark signed today an agreement on implementing the "Clean Development Mechanism" project whose value is $200,000.
Sekulovic said at a press conference that the aim of this environmental project is to offer UN expert assistance in establishing an authorised national institution that will work on the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol in Serbia.
He explained that the project envisages construction of industrial capacities in line with the Kyoto Protocol which Serbia is expected to ratify soon.
According to Sekulovic, those capacities are expected to reduce air pollution and destruction of the ozone layer, and to become an institutional framework for the Protocol's implementation.
Sekulovic recalled that the Serbian government has adopted the Kyoto Protocol which is expected to be ratified by the end of summer at the latest.
He said that the project “Clean Development Mechanism” has great importance for Serbia, considering that its essence is in financing new technologies which will reduce environmental pollution.
Clark said on the occasion that one of the problems faced by Serbia is energy inefficiency, and presented a statistic showing that Serbia is currently consuming three times more energy than the world average in order to produce €1 of GDP.
According to Clark, the aim of the project is to reduce energy consumption in Serbia and risks from global warming.
He said that users of the project will be the Serbian Ministry of Science and Environmental Protection and the Serbian Ministry of Energy and Mining.
