During his stay in Belgrade, Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University Hospital of Geneva Afksendiyos Kalangos operated upon ten children with complex congenital cardiac anomalies at the Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases in Belgrade, the Mother and Child Health Care Institute in New Belgrade and the University Child Clinic in Tirsova Street, Belgrade.
At a press conference held at the University Child Clinic, Kalangos pointed out that his visit to Belgrade is educational, scientific and humanitarian in character, and should acquaint Serbian doctors with new skills, establish cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine and offer financial assistance for improving the work of the Faculty.
Serbian Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic said that results of these operations are far-reaching since they provide training for domestic experts when it comes to modern equipment which Kalangos used during the operations.
Serbian experts watched the live video recording of Kalangos implanting the biodegradable Kalangos Ring. They saw that the implantation of the biodegradable device is much more suitable in children as the Ring degrades in the body and no additional operations are required.
Director of the Serbian Health Insurance Directorate Svetlana Vukajlovic said that Kalangos's visit is of huge significance, because until now children had to go abroad for such operations, or international experts had to come to Serbia, so that the cost of the surgical procedure went from €5,000 to €30,000.
The University Child Clinic opened two new and modernly equipped cardio surgical operation and intensive care wards, financed mostly by the Ministry of Health, and thus considerably increased the capacity of the Clinic.
