Speaking at a conference held on the occasion of World Meteorological Day, she said that according to the World Meteorological Organisation, hundreds of natural disasters take place annually in the world, of which 37% are floods, while 28% are storms, and 9% are droughts.
She explained that around 8% of natural disasters are earthquakes, 6% avalanches, 5% fires and extreme temperatures, while 2% are volcanic eruptions.
She pointed out that the role of the meteorological and hydrological services is to be the first link in the chain of protection from natural disasters.
According to Andrejevic, if such a service warns about a natural disaster in time, it allows other services to respond quickly and prepare citizens to protect themselves and their material possessions.
She added that RHMZ Serbia will continue to implement a mid-term plan of organisation and strengthening of staff. She recalled that the Serbian government’s plan for this year also envisages the adoption of a law on meteorological and hydrological activities and on the monitoring of the quality of air and water.
The law is in the last phase of preparation and will go through the parliamentary procedure in the second quarter of this year.
