Chris Webber scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Kings while Predrag Peja Stojakovic and Vlade Divac added 14 points apiece.
Brad Miller chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Doug Christie picked up 13 points.
Sam Cassell amassed 40 points for Minnesota but the Timberwolves could not keep up in the final session after the game was tied 73-73 following three quarters.
Game Two will be held Saturday.
