Minister of Health Zlatibor Loncar stated today that mortality rate in Serbia increased by around 70 percent over the past four years in relation to the average from 2012 to 2016.
Speaking at a presentation of results of the Commission for analysis of deaths caused by COVID-19 disease held in the Palace of Serbia, Loncar said that the greatest number of deaths in Serbia were recorded in December 2019.
According to Loncar, this statistics includes all patients, not only those who were sick with COVID-19 and added that similar data were recorded in Slovenia, Lithuania, Bulgaria.
He announced that he will come out with more precise data for younger population in the coming days, but that it has been determined that three quarters of the deceased were older than 65.
Speaking about why no autopsy has been performed on coronavirus patients, the Minister said that that was strictly forbidden by the World Health Organization and medical experts.
Answering the question as to how many deaths were recorded in the period from 19 March to 1 June 2020, Loncar explained that the Commission for analysis of deaths caused by COVID-19 disease found it important to do the analysis of deaths for the period of one year, and not only during certain months for which there were claims they had an excessive number of deaths.
We opted for the analysis that covers the period of one year. The smallest problem is to do an analysis for that period too, but this is something we promised we would do. I think it is more important to give an analysis for one year, than for just a few months only in order to prove whether some allegations were true or not, the Minister stated.
