State Secretary of the Ministry of Health Mirsad Djerlek stated today that mass vaccination in Serbia is expected in the first quarter of 2021, and that a certain amount of vaccines will arrive by the end of 2020.
At the press conference of the COVID-19 crisis response team, Djerlek announced that 350,000 doses of vaccines are expected by March next year.
He emphasised that the citizens of Serbia will receive a vaccine approved by the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices, which safe and effective.
The State Secretary confirmed that the peak of the third wave in Serbia is expected to be reached in the period from 15 to 20 December, and that after that the situation will begin to calm down, especially in Belgrade, where the number of patients has already started to decline.
Only seven to 10 days ago, more than 50 percent of the total number were infected in the capital, while now it has been reduced by 20 percent, Djerlek specified and added that there are now approximately 2,000 newly infected, which represents a flattening of the curve.
According to him, the number of new patients in the whole of Serbia will not fall at the same time, but it will happen first in Belgrade, and only then in other parts, since the infection has spread from the capital to other parts of the country.
Director of the Clinical Centre of Vojvodina Edita Stokic said that 422 patients were hospitalized in this health institution, of which 25 were on mechanical ventilation, while a large number of patients were on intensive oxygen support due to the moderate and severe clinical picture.
Stokic stated that the Military Medical Centre in Petrovaradin, where 29 patients were hospitalized, joined the Clinical Centre of Vojvodina in the COVID system.
As she reminded, the COVID system also includes the Institute for Lung Diseases in Sremska Kamenica.
She emphasised that due to the drastic increase in the number of patients suffering from COVID-19 and due to the tenfold increase in the number of examinations in the outpatient clinic, the Provincial Secretary of Health issued an order to turn the Novi Sad Fair into a temporary COVID hospital.
