Prime Minister Ana Brnabic stated that today is the worst day since the start of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and specified that 18 persons died over the past 24 hours.
Speaking at an extraordinary press conference, Brnabic said that out of 8,646 people tested for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, 386 were positive, and that 130 patients are on ventilatory support.
According to her, the situation is still the most critical in Belgrade, followed by Sabac, Kragujevac and Novi Pazar.
The Prime Minister pointed out that a dramatic deterioration of the situation is being noticed in the entire region, but also in the world, and that, if we continue like this, we will quickly reach the figures recorded during the peak of the coronavirus epidemic.
Brnabic warned that in some figures we are approaching the worst parameters that we had in April.
The worst day since the beginning of the epidemic in terms of the number of people on ventilatory support was 12 April when we had 146 patients, and in terms of the number of newly infected was 16 April, when we recorded 445 new cases, she specified.
Brnabic reiterated that this is a dramatic worsening of the situation that is present in the entire region, but also around the globe.
She said that 116 newly infected people have been registered in Croatia, 310 in Bosnia-Herzegovina and 59 in Montenegro, adding that this shows that we must all join in the fight with all our strength that we showed in March and April.
If the situation doesn’t improve, we will not hesitate to introduce the most restrictive measures in order to protect people’s health and lives, the Prime Minister stated.
She said that she is convinced that we can bring the numbers under control with joint efforts without introducing a total ban on movement, but that this requires an absolute discipline from every person individually.
The Prime Minister explained that everything will depend on whether the measures adopted 10 days ago will give results, and added that the consequences of a completely irresponsible gathering at the protests will be seen in the next three to five days.
Brnabic reiterated that the most effective measure would be the introduction of a state of emergency and a ban on movement, at least on weekends, which would interrupt the existing growth of numbers and enable "breathing space" for our health system, considering that this fight will last a long time.
It is clear that this is not the way to live in the long run, and we hope that everyone will respect the recommendations of not only the COVID-19 Crisis Response Team, but also by the World Health Organization, and these are wearing a mask, keeping a distance of at least a meter and a half and washing hands, the Prime Minister underlined.
