Hungary opens border to Serbian citizens

Belgrade/Roszke, 25 May 2020

Minister of European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto and Speaker of the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina Istvan Pastor met today at the border town near the Hungarian-Serbian border Roszke.

Speaking at a press conference held after the meeting, Szijjarto stated that the citizens of Serbia and Hungary can freely pass the border between the two countries as of today at 10.00, without obligatory quarantine.

He said that the Hungarian government decided to make this decision after the Serbian government allowed the entry to Serbian and foreign nationals into Serbia without an obligatory test for coronavirus and quarantine.

The citizens of Serbia and Hungary can freely enter Hungary at all ten border crossings, the Minister said and added that this will boost the bilateral economic relations.

Szijjarto underlined that the Serbian and Hungarian economies are closely tied and that Hungary will continue the development programme in Vojvodina which envisages 6 billion forints for 54 projects approved by the government.

The Minister noted that the border is being opened today between an EU member state and a state that is still not an EU member, which confirms that Serbia belongs in the EU, which should admit it as soon as possible.
