Minister of Finance Sinisa Mali wished happy International Workers’ Day to the citizens of Serbia, and emphasised that during the pandemic of coronavirus our country has shown how much it takes care of each worker.
Mali pointed out that despite these difficult times for the economy around the world, we focused all our efforts precisely on making workers feel the burden of the coronavirus pandemic as little as possible.
He recalled that the Economic Measures Programme was adopted to help employees retain their jobs and earn salaries while making it easier for their employers to do business.
Serbia is one of the few countries in the world where a small percentage of people have lost their jobs, and we are better off than the most powerful economies in that respect. Today, 134 years after workers secured their labour rights, employees across the globe are facing some new challenges, the Minister said.
According to him, today it is more important than ever to fight for the domestic economy to continue to grow and boost domestic production.
While the world's largest powers experienced a huge economic downturn in the first quarter, Serbia saw a 5 percent growth, Mali said, adding that during the pandemic, we showed that our economy is flexible and adaptable and that we can produce the necessary medical supplies and medicines.
He said that companies and workers have organised themselves well and adapted to new circumstances, emphasising that everything that our people produce contributes to the strength and growth of our economy.
The Minister said that it is important in these new circumstances that workers are protected at work and that their employers provide them with all the necessary equipment so that they can do their jobs smoothly.
