Provincial Health Secretary of AP Vojvodina Zoran Gojkovic said that according to the latest report today at 15.00, samples were tested for 2,645 people, of which 424 were positive, so the total number of COVID-19 patients now is 4,054.
Gojkovic said at a regular press conference at the Palace of Serbia that 2,890 patients have been hospitalised to date, 138 are using the ventilator, whereas a total of 20,958 have been tested.
He noted that in the last 24 hours, five more people have died as a result of infection with the virus, with three males and two females, with an average age of 76.
In our country, 85 people have died since the outbreak of the epidemic, and the mortality rate is 2.09% at the moment, Gojkovic added.
According to him, 140 users, as well as four employees, are positive at the Gerontology Center in Nis.
The director of the institution was imprisoned this morning, and criminal charges will be pressed against him for serious negligence against human health, for which imprisonment of up to 12 years is imposed.
Unfortunately, this is a consequence of a very unprofessional behaviour and non-compliance with regulations, where we found a number of irregularities in the work of the centre, which led to such a large number of people infected at the institution, the Provincial Secretary emphasised.
He pointed out that visits of relatives and out-of-home visits were allowed at the Gerontological Centre of Nis, which was strictly forbidden by regulations and contrary to the orders of the authorities to act in accordance with the protocol.
Gojkovic said that there are indications that the symptoms of the disease were hidden at the beginning of the infection, emphasising that this is an indicator of what can happen if an individual does not respect the measures introduced and what complications can occur.
According to him, the largest number of Serbian citizens adhere to the measures introduced, and those who do not will be severely sanctioned.
