Deputy Director of the Public Health Institute “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut” Darija Kisic Tepavcevic stated that since the last report until 15.00 today 1,893 persons have been tested, of whom 238 tested positive for coronavirus.
Speaking at a regular coronavirus press briefing at the Palace of Serbia, Kisic Tepavcevic said that a total of 2,107 patients have been hospitalised to date, 136 are on ventilatory support, while a total of 14,240 persons have been tested.
In the last 24 hours five more persons died from COVID-19, four of whom were male patients and one female.
A total number of coronavirus fatalities in Serbia is 71, and the death rate at this moment is 2.29.
Kisic Tepavcevic said that there are approximately 650 patients in field hospitals at the moment, noting that there, as a rule, patients do not stay log, while the average stay in hospitals is about two weeks.
The epidemic is under control, she said, and noted that the percentage of patients positive for coronavirus has not increased, although the number of tests has increased.
Kisic Tepavcevic also confirmed that the presence of this virus was confirmed in 12 of the 223 employees at the Torlak Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Serums.
Epidemiologist Predrag Kon pointed out that Serbia is entering the sixth week of the epidemic, which is the time when the epidemiological curve is at its peak.
In his view, a complete ban on movement would prevent the virus from entering a vulnerable population and lead to an outbreak, which would undo everything that we have done until now to combat the epidemic.
The purpose of the ban is to make people understand that contacts are unacceptable at this moment.
During holidays contacts among people are more frequent and that is the most sensitive period, after which it will be clearer if we will be able to suppress the virus which has the strength and activity only when there are many people infected, Kon underlined.
We have a slight increase in new cases in relation to yesterday, but we still have flattening, he said and added that he has support from his colleagues epidemiologists in the position that the prohibition of contacts is by far the best measure.
