Cortanovci tunnel on Belgrade-Budapest railway dug

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic said today, upon the digging of the first tube of the Cortanovci tunnel on the Belgrade-Budapest fast railway, that infrastructure remains an important driver of the economy and development despite the coronavirus epidemic.

Tunnelling is an important moment on every project and in ordinary circumstances. However, knowing that Cortanovci is one of the largest infrastructure construction sites in Europe, where despite the epidemic all deadlines are respected, this is a result that Serbia should be proud of, Mihajlovic emphasized.

The Deputy Prime Minister recalled that 500 to approximately 1,000 workers have been active every day on the entire section from Stara Pazova to Novi Sad since the COVID-19 epidemic measures were put in place.

She also conveyed her gratitude to the Russian Railways for their dedication to the project, as well as for taking particular care of protecting workers in the face of the epidemic.

Mihajlovic also expressed her gratitude to all domestic and foreign contractors who complied with the Ministry's recommendation to maintain the level of activity on construction sites as it has been before the state of emergency, with the implementation of all government measures for the spread of the contagion.

Infrastructure will also be important in the aftermath of the pandemic, when we will fight for higher economic growth and that is why it is important for us to preserve our companies with the help of government measures for support to the economy, just as companies should take special care of their workers because a big joint work is waiting for us once the epidemic is over, Mihajlovic said.
