Minister of Justice in a caretaker capacity Nenad Vujić met today with a delegation from the Ministry of the Interior of Angola to discuss strengthening multisectoral cooperation in the field of justice and the enforcement of criminal sanctions.
The delegation, headed by Angolan Minister of the Interior Manuel Gomes da Conceição Homem, was particularly interested in exchanging experiences on strengthening the system of non-custodial sanctions and measures, known as alternative sanctions.
Vujić pointed out that the system of non-custodial sanctions now accounts for 25% of the total number of criminal sanctions enforced in Serbia, recalling that 10 years ago, this percentage stood at only 9.7%.
We are fully committed to establishing a modern and efficient probation service, he said, adding that at present almost 2,900 persons are serving some form of non-custodial sanction or measure.
The Minister noted that, in addition to statistical indicators, the benefits that this type of sanction provides to individuals and society are of particular importance, such as giving individuals the opportunity to continue their education and employment and, ultimately, to maintain close family relationships and ties with the community in which this type of sanction is implemented.
