Minister of European Integration Nemanja Starović highlighted today in Nicosia, at a meeting of the EU General Affairs Council, Serbia’s commitment to implementing reform processes that lead us towards EU membership.
At the plenary session of the meeting, Starović particularly emphasised that implementing reforms is an obligation of the candidates, but that the EU must ensure credibility of the accession process and fairly assess the results.
He expressed his strong support for the further development of the staged accession to the EU since only such an approach can reconcile enlargement with the need for the EU to remain effective.
Staged accession is not a substitute for full membership, but a bridge leading towards that goal, while at the same time bringing tangible benefits to citizens, reducing accession fatigue, strengthening pro-European sentiment and proving in the right way that reforms pay off, the Minister stated.
