Improving integration policies for persons granted asylum

Commissioner for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia Nataša Stanisavljević opened today, together with Director of the Cooperation Office of the Embassy of the Swiss Confederation Richard Kohli the international conference “From Reception to Integration: Strengthening Support Systems and Exchange of Experiences”.

At the conference, which was held with the aim of exchanging good practices and improving integration policies for persons granted asylum, Stanisavljević pointed out that 261 persons have been granted asylum in Serbia since 2008.

She stressed that integration remains one of the key challenges of modern asylum systems, specifying that between 300 and 400 people apply for asylum annually, while between eight and ten applications are approved, bearing in mind that a significant number of applicants do not remain in the country until the procedure is completed.

As she pointed out, Serbia has significantly improved its approach to integration in recent years, which includes support in access to education, the labor market and social services, so that persons with recognized protection become active and equal members of society.

The conference is the first in a series of three planned within the project “Secure Procedures. Rights for All. Strengthening Migration Management and the Asylum System in Serbia”, which is being implemented with the support of the Government of Switzerland and in cooperation with UNHCR, IOM and the Ministry of the Interior.
