Empowering women foundation of sustainable development, social stability

Belgrade/New York, 12 March 2026

Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Snežana Paunović stated at a reception at the Permanent Mission of Serbia to the United Nations, organised on the occasion of the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, that Serbia remains a reliable partner in creating a world in which every woman and girl has equal opportunities, security and dignity.

Paunović, who leads the Serbian delegation at this important gathering, emphasised that Serbia has improved the legislative and institutional framework, strengthened mechanisms for protection against discrimination and violence, and developed programmes for the economic empowerment of women, especially in local communities.

The Minister said that formal equality is not enough, but that it is necessary to remove structural obstacles, combat stereotypes and build a culture of equal opportunities.

According to her, this is why our country will strengthen cooperation with civil society, international partners and other UN member states.

This session is an opportunity to confirm our commitment to improving the position of women and take responsibility for concrete steps in our countries, said Paunović, adding that women's empowerment is not only a matter of justice, but also of sustainable development, economic progress and social stability.
