Serbia continuously improves position of women, families

Belgrade/New York, 12 March 2026

Minister without portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women and economic and political empowerment of women Tatjana Macura organised an event entitled The Vital Role of Women: Building Alliances for Empowerment at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on the sidelines of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

When it comes to Serbia’s policies in this area, the Minister emphasised that the state leadership continuously pays attention to improving the position of women, families and older adults.

Macura pointed out that efforts have been made in recent years to improve the economic position of older adults, who today enjoy the most stable economic conditions in recent decades.

She recalled that Serbia is currently the only country in the Western Balkans that has a special minister in charge of gender equality, which, as she assessed, confirms a strong institutional commitment to improving the position of women.

In addition to the Office of Minister Macura, the co-organisers of this event are Slovakia, Türkiye, Nigeria, Azerbaijan and the United Arab Emirates.

The event also featured a speech by State Secretary to the Minister of Social Security of Finland Laura Rissanen, while representatives of domestic, international and regional institutions also participated in the discussion.
