Further development of cooperation with Cyprus in field of defence

Belgrade/Nicosia, 10 December 2025

Serbian Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić met today in Nicosia with Cypriot Minister of Defence Vasilis Palmas, emphasising during the meeting the importance of strengthening good relations between the two countries, which are based on traditional friendship, historical closeness and respect between the two peoples.

Following the meeting of the two ministers, a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) was signed.

This document facilitates future cooperation between the two armies and once again confirms the great mutual trust and respect between the institutions of Serbia and Cyprus, emphasised Gašić, adding that in the coming period, efforts will be made to strengthen military-to-military and military-economic cooperation.

The Minister expressed his gratitude to Cyprus for its principled and consistent stance regarding the non-recognition of the independence of the so-called Kosovo and for its significant support in preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia.

He stated that Serbia fully respects the territorial integrity of Cyprus, both on land and at sea, and supports the process of finding a solution to the situation on the island through peaceful means and dialogue.

Palmas said that today’s meeting indicates the close cooperation between the two countries, highlighting Cyprus’s clear position on the non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called Kosovo, as well as its readiness to support any initiative to strengthen stability and reinforce constructive dialogue in the region.
