Serbia committed to improving position, role of women and girls in science

Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begovic highlighted, in her opening address as part of the 78th UN General Assembly in New York, the leading role of women in science, by which they provide inspiration and motivation for future generations.

Begovic spoke on the panel entitled "Women in Science Rising: Leadership in Business and Economics" on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

The Minister noted that the panel had a special focus on natural sciences and engineering, stating that there was a very lively discussion on how to motivate girls to turn to natural sciences and engineering as their careers.

Listening to women from all over the world who attended this conference, as she stated, we are not even aware of how much we are at an advantage over others because we have a high percentage of women, as much as 47 percent, who decide to enroll in these fields.

Our girls have the freedom of choice to study what they want, but also the strength to recognise that the future is in science, she said.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated on 11 February and was established on 22 December 2015 at the UN General Assembly, with the aim of encouraging women and girls to engage in science.
