Minister of Science and Environmental Protection Aleksandar Popovic

The importance of the feasibility study on Serbia-Montenegro’s EU accession in the area of environmental protection is reflected in the positive assessment of our readiness and ability to establish an environmental protection system above all through implementing laws adopted by the Serbian assembly in December 2004.

These laws are harmonised with the EU regulations that correspond in a modern and functional way with standards and norms of the EU and other international agreements and contracts, as well as with the mechanisms of environmental protection and sustainable development.

The adoption of the feasibility study will considerably accelerate the integration process of environmental protection into other policy sectors, and the harmonisation of environmental protection legislature as a whole.

The forming of the Serbian Environmental Protection Agency and the Fund for Environmental Protection creates conditions for establishing and strengthening the institutional system of this area.

The signing of the feasibility study will also help the National Strategy and Action Plan in the area of environmental protection to be efficiently and timely harmonised with EU policy.
