Born on 1 January 1966 in Prizren. He completed the "Stevan Sremac" Grammar School in Nis. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade, with a grade point average of 10 (ten).

From 1992, he was a deputy in the Federal Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and since 2004 he has been a deputy in the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia too.

He was the Minister of Information in the Transitional Government of Serbia in 2000. He has been the President of the Socialist Party of Serbia since 2006.

He was the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior from July 2008 to July 2012. He served as Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior from July 2012 to April 2014. From April 2014 to October 2020, he was the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. From October 2020 to August 2022, he served as Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

He has decades of experience and results achieved in participation and leadership in various executive and legislative bodies in the Republic of Serbia. In 2015, he chaired the OSCE.

He received the award "The Best Man of Europe" in 2009, the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation in 2018, and the “Captain Misa Anastasijevic" Statuette recognition in 2018.

His hobby is music.

He held the positions of President of Basketball Club Partizan from Belgrade, Vice President of the Yugoslav Olympic Committee and President of the Sports Association of Serbia.
