Legal level of aflatoxin in milk set at 0.5 micrograms

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Goran Knezevic said today that the government decided to change the Rules on the allowed amount of aflatoxin in milk from the current 0.05 micrograms per kilogram to 0.5 micrograms, as it was two years ago.
The government has received opinions from all relevant institutions those changes will not put at risk public health, he noted.
Those quantities cannot have an adverse effect on people's health and will allow export of milk to two-thirds of the world, he told a news conference.
The Minister pointed out that the standard prescribing the allowed amount of 0.5 micrograms of aflatoxin per kg is applied in Russia, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, India, Bulgaria, which is in the EU, and some other countries.
He said that the results of the analysis from the Netherlands are being waited for and reiterated that the milk market in Serbia is proper and completely safe, and that the milk suspected of having an increased presence of aflatoxin has been withdrawn for preventive reasons.
