Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica met today with UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura, who harshly condemned the March violence against Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija and destruction of Orthodox churches and monasteries.
Matsuura said that the Decani monastery will soon be placed under the protection of UNESCO, adding that it is necessary to make an accurate assessment of the damage to Orthodox churches in Kosovo so that they could be repaired as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Kostunica highlighted the importance of re-establishing full cooperation with UNESCO. He said that it is very important that cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija, where different cultures and religions meet, be preserved.
Matsuura congratulated the Serbian Prime Minister on successful celebration of the World Press Freedom Day, held in Belgrade. The festivity gathered around 200 journalists from all over the world, and the Belgrade Declaration on Support to the Media in Conflict Areas and Countries in Transition was adopted.
