Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said today that Serbia is no longer a country of cheap labour and that this can no longer be emphasised as its comparative advantage in attracting foreign investment.
Brnabic said in her address to the students and teachers of the Pancevo Secondary School of Mechanical Engineering that we are now working on bringing as many innovative companies as possible, noting that salaries amount to more than €1,000 in their research centres.
The Prime Minister underlined that Serbia has a historically low unemployment rate of 9.5 percent, that it has attracted €3.5 billion in investments last year, and so far in 2019, 30 percent more than in the same period in 2018.
There are already more development centres in Serbia, and as of New Year, one French company will come to Novi Sad with such a centre, she announced, and recalled that Serbia gives special incentives to companies that invest in development.
We are planning to build 10 regional training centres across Serbia, and one of them will be in the Pancevo Secondary School of Mechanical Engineering, Brnabic stated.
The Serbian government will support the construction of a 1,800 square metre workshop in the school and the purchase of modern equipment.
She pointed out that the Pancevo Secondary School of Mechanical Engineering, which she visited today, is one good example because it has cooperation with state-owned companies Utva and Refinery, but also with foreign companies ZF and Brose, whereas German MTU is interested in cooperation in the field of staff training.
According to Brnabic, it is one of the first schools to introduce dual education and the results are showing that 80 percent of dual education students are employed by the employers where they had their lessons of practical education.
The Prime Minister of Serbia estimated that the situation in the South Banat Administrative District is now much better than five years ago, because many foreign investments have arrived, which affected the entire regional economy, but also assessed that much more needs to be done and that is why she came to Pancevo.
