Argentina strongly supports Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic said tonight after meeting with his Argentine counterpart Jorge Taiana that this South American country opposes the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo-Metohija.

Jeremic told the Tanjug news agency that Argentina’s position on the Kosovo-Metohija issue is very firm and added that this country strongly supports Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and remains dedicated to the principles of international law.

He said that he and his Argentine colleague agreed on a series of joint steps within international multilateral institutions related to Serbia's diplomatic approach to Kosovo noting that Serbia can count on Argentina’s full support in that sense.

Argentina will support our initiative within the UN General Assembly to ask the opinion of the International Court of Justice on the legality of recognising Kosovo’s unilateral independence and will actively advocate that this initiative is supported by Latin America countries and within the framework the Non-Aligned Movement, Jeremic said.

The Argentine hosts were optimistic about support for Serbia’s initiative in Latin America, despite pressures to recognise the independence of the Serbian southern province, Jeremic noted.

The Minister recalled that Argentina is currently presiding over South America's leading trading bloc MERCOSUR, which makes this country even more important in the sense that it forms the agenda of this organisation and represents the organisation's positions in many multilateral forums, including the UN.

Argentina will also initiate a debate within MERCOSUR on the process of solving the future status of Kosovo. I hope that Argentina, with the support of Brazil, will manage to reach a joint majority position for Latin American states to back Serbia's initiative in the UN General Assembly, said Jeremic.

The aim of this initiative is to call on international law in the process of solving the Kosovo problem, he said and stressed that the support of two major Latin American states is of great diplomatic importance.

Apart from the Kosovo issue, the Foreign Minister discussed with Taiana bilateral relations and economic cooperation between the two countries. He also announced Taiana's visit to Belgrade in June and Argentine President Christina Fernandez in 2009.
